On Sunday, October 24th Boston Court joins Playhouse Village and Mercadito Monarca in celebration of Día de los Muertos with live performances in our parking lot from Emanuel Giella and his band, and youth slam poets from Get Lit.
Our ofrenda, created by Denise Esparza and dedicated to loved ones lost by our community, will also be on view in our lobby throughout the afternoon. Join us on the 24th from 1PM-7PM for an afternoon of music and poetry celebrating the lives of those we have lost and the tradition of Día de los Muertos.
Our Día de los Muertos celebration centers the tremendous loss and grief we have experienced in the last year and a half as COVID-19 has swept through our communities and homes. As the world begins to reopen, we want to pause and hold space with you to honor, grieve, and celebrate those you have lost in the past year and a half, and to acknowledge the frustrating dissonance of the world reopening while family, friends, and community members continue to get sick and die.
Schedule of Events
- 1PM-7PM: Boston Court Ofrenda open for public viewing
- 2PM: Emanuel Giella and Get Lit Youth Poets perform on our outdoor stage
- 3:30PM: Emanuel Giella, Get Lit Youth Poets, and the L.A. Children’s Chorus Young Men’s Ensemble perform on our outdoor stage
- 5PM: Emanuel Giella performs on our outdoor stage

MEET DAY ONE
We’re excited to partner with Day One! DO is a local organization that builds vibrant, healthy cities by advancing public health, empowering youth, and igniting change.
DO will present an interactive Día de los Muertos Chalk Art experience led by local artist Gloria Ruth.
MEET THE ALTARIST
Denise Esparza, a Chicana altarista, was born in 1966 in East Los Angeles. She is the daughter of Ofelia & Amado Esparza the youngest of their nine children. Denise represents six generations of altar makers of Purepecha roots, hailing from Guanajuato, Mexico. Her work as an altarista and handcrafter was heavily influenced by her mother, Ofelia Esparza, who is globally recognized for her Day of the Dead ofrendas (altars/shrines) and by her grandmother Lupe Aviles Salazar. Esparza has assisted her mother in hundreds of altars throughout her life, including those at Self-help Graphics & Art and museums in Los Angeles, Chicago, IL and Washington DC. It is these experiences that have inspired Denise to venture out on her own in the last six years as an altarista in her own right. She continues in these traditions with her 4 children and 4 grandchildren.

Domingo el 24 de Octubre, Boston Court se afilia con Playhouse Village y Mercadito Monarca en celebracíon del Día de los Muertos con presentaciones en vivo de Emanuel Giella y su banda, y poetas juveniles de Get Lit en nuestra estacionamiento. Nuestro celebración de Día de los Muertos centra la pérdida y dolor tremendo que hemos experimentado en el último año y medio durante COVID-19. Mientras el mundo comienza a abrirse, queremos tomar una pausa y mantener espacio para honrar, lamentar, y celebrar los seres queridos que hemos perdido durante el último año y medio, y también para reconocer la disonancia frustrante de la re-abriendo del mundo cuando familia, amigos, y miembros de la comunidad continúan enfermándose y muriendo.
