PLAYS WITH A PURPOSE

Plays have power. They “hold a mirror up to nature.” (Thanks, Shakespeare.) Each month we’ll read a play that is vitally relevant to something happening in our world today and then have a casual community conversation about the script and the story. Be sure to join us!

SUN, NOV 22, 4PM – PASS OVER by Antoinette Nwandu
We’re so excited to announce our third, and final, book club selection for the year. A provocative riff on Waiting for GodotPass Over is a rare piece of politically charged theater by a bold new American voice.
Moses and Kitch stand around on the corner – talking shit, passing the time, and hoping that maybe today will be different. As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans.
Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle just looking for a way out.
Please note: this play contains racially charged themes and language.

FAQ’s

Do I need to read the play before the event?  Yes!

Will Boston Court be providing the script? It depends. If the script has been published we will try to provide free or inexpensive ways to access it. If not, you will most likely receive a downloadable PDF.

This event is on Zoom. What do I need to know?  Make sure to download Zoom before the event. The link to attend will be in the confirmation email you’ll receive upon registration. If you need help installing Zoom, just email helpdesk@bostoncourtpasadena.org for email support or to set up a time for a phone call.

Will I be on camera?  Yes! (If you’re comfortable with it.) We’d love to see your face as we talk, so be sure to turn your video on when joining the zoom. If you’d prefer to do audio only, that’s fine too! Just leave the video off.

Can anyone join the Book Club? Absolutely! If there’s something we can do to make it easier for you to participate, please let us know.

Is the Book Club “kid-friendly”? We’ll provide a “movie rating” to each script to help parents decide if the play is appropriate for their children.

Can I request plays for future Book Club sessions? Sure! Feel free to make a recommendation during the discussion or email us any time.
