Letters from Home examines creator/performer Kalean Ung’s story as a bi-racial, second-generation American in light of new discoveries she makes about her family’s Cambodian refugee history. This kaleidoscopic play weaves myth, music, and Shakespeare’s iconic female characters into a journey of familial connection and self-discovery.
Letters From Home is a project of The New Wild, created in collaboration with director Marina McClure and composer Chinary Ung.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kalean Ung is an award-winning actress, singer, and interdisciplinary artist. Her professional work ranges from Shakespeare to experimental theatre and contemporary opera. She has performed at The Kirk Douglas Theatre, Theatre @ Boston Court, REDCAT, Disney Hall, The Hammer Museum, Highways Performance Space, The Actors’ Gang, and The Getty Villa, among others, collaborating with critically-acclaimed theatre and opera companies including Critical Mass Performance Group, The Industry, Rogue Artists Ensemble, Independent Shakespeare Company, Four Larks Theatre, and CalArts’ Center for New Performance.

Kalean teaches at CalArts. She received her MFA in Acting from CalArts and her BM in Vocal Performance from UCSC.
