CAMINO REAL

SEASON 2011

By Tennessee Williams
Directed by Jessica Kubzansky

A Co-Production with CalArts

The Camino Real is a surreal walled-in city which becomes a kind of purgatory for the play’s myriad characters, famous figures from literature and history and those of Williams’ own invention. These lost souls, terrified of what lies beyond the wall–the Terra Incognita–struggle to escape their fate or make one last, meaningful connection. This contemporary, comic, and heartbreaking flight of theatricality is Tennessee Williams at his most surprising.

“There are people who think that Camino Real was Tennessee Williams’ best play and I believe that they are right. It is a play torn out of a human soul.” – Clive Barnes, The New York Times

“As I often say about shows at Boston Court, go see it with people you enjoy holding intellectual conversations with afterward.” – Frances Baum Nicholson, Pasadena Star News

GO! “Camino Real is a curiosity that you’re not likely to see again — let alone this well.” – LA Weekly

“…a viscerally stunning and emotionally resonant portrait of longing, suffering, and redemption.” – Backstage

“The cast was absolutely phenomenal.” – PROXArt

“Kubzansky stages the action with great vitality, excelling in big set piece moments such the arrival of a passenger plane or the departure of a dead man into the keeping of the sinister street sweepers, and the constant activity of the large ensemble is admirably detailed.” – LAist

“Matthew Goodrich brings both to his splendid Kilroy, the wiry ex-boxer with “a heart as big as the head of a baby” (think Mangiacavallo in “Rose Tattoo”). As the play’s designated everyman, Goodrich balances innocence and cynicism when he encounters gypsy Esmeralda (lovely Kalean Ung), whose virginity is restored nightly to her johns’ delight. Theirs is the most fully realized “block,” genuine heatgenerated by a Rio-tinged Carnavale choreographed by Ameenah Kaplan to Kwan Fai Lam’s pulsating score.” – Variety
