LA Opera Young Artists in Concert

Season 2017

As part of Boston Court’s Emerging Artists program, LA Opera’s artist-in-residence Matthew Aucoin, joined by the rising stars of the company’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist program, presents a musical exploration of Mozart’s unique artistic trajectory.

Mozart was not, as he’s often portrayed, just a faintly-annoying child prodigy to whom everything came easy. He was a serious, questing artist who spent his few adult years transforming his youthful brilliance into music of sublime simplicity. Aucoin and LA Opera’s Young Artists will follow Mozart’s evolution – from the overflowing virtuosity of his early vocal music to the uncanny power of the works written on his deathbed.

Event begins at 8pm.

Matthew Aucoin is an American composer, conductor, writer and pianist.  He is the newly-appointed Artist-in-Residence at Los Angeles Opera. This position, created for Aucoin, fuses his work as composer and conductor. Most recently, Aucoin conducted the LA premiere of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten, and next season he conducts both his own opera Crossing and Verdi’s Rigoletto. Aucoin will also compose a new full-length work for LA Opera which will premiere in a future season. Additionally, he serves as the company’s advisor on new music and work regularly works with members of the young artist program

Created and overseen by Plácido Domingo, the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program is a two- to three-year paid residency for singers and pianists of exceptional talent who are currently in transition from academic training to a professional career in opera.
